What is an RD?
I feel that I should begin by disussing the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist since this is a hot topic in the nutrition field. Most people do not realize that the term "nutritionist" has no real legal meaning. Technically, almost anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, whether they have a solid background in nutrition or just took a 3 week online course. That's not to say that all nutritionists are quacks, you just never know. On the other hand, a Registered Dietitian has a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, has completed an accredited Dietetic Internship, and has passed a national exam. In addition, RDs are required to complete continuing education credits on an ongoing basis for their registration to remain active. For whatever reason, nutrition is one of those topics that has a lot of misinformation floating around. With so many different sources giving out nutrition advice (much of it conflicting) it is important that consumers know how to spot a reliable source. If you're serious about changing your health and nutrition habits, do your homework and make sure you consult a qualified individual such as a Registered Dietitian.
